International Academic Conference ‘Empowering Sustainability in a Fragile World’

On December 14-15, 2017 the international research consortium led by the Lomonosov Moscow State University (School of World Politics - Center for Security and Development Studies), University of California (Irvine) and Institute for Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, held an international academic conference' Empowering Sustainability in a Fragile World' in partnership with the Russian International Affairs Council and with financial support from the Russian Science Foundation (project №15-18-30066).

The conference initiated a substantive discussion on the complex linkages between security, peace and development - the most pertinent in the vast region of the Middle East and North Africa suffering from institutional failures, bloody civil conflicts, escalation of great powers’ rivalries and the rising tide of Jihadism - between the security and development specialists, as well as experts on individual countries and regions from Russia, the Middle East and North Africa, Western Europe, and North America.

There were more than 30 presentations on the 7 panels sessions:

  • Security, Stability, and Sustainability: Linking the Global and the Regional;

  • Fragile States and States of Fragility: When Theory Meets Practice;

  • Myth of Negative Peace: Jihadism and Armed Violence in the 21st century;
  • Resource Scarcity, Inequality, and Insecurity: World of Multiple Vulnerabilities;

  • How to End Violence: Lessons for New Political Settlements;
  • How to Ensure Security and the Rule Of Law in the Context of Political Transformation?;
  • How to Foster Sustainable and Peaceful Economic Development in Fragile Settings: Endogenuous and Exogenous Factors.

The Special Guest of the conference was Konstantin Kosachev, Member of the Federation Council of the RF Federal Assembly, Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, deputy secretary of the presidium of the General Council of the United Russia party.
