The 5th World Peace Forum: ‘The Order of Common Security: Cooperation, Inclusiveness and Open Access’

On July 16-17, 2016 the CSDS Director Vladimir Bartenev participated in the 5th World Peace Forum entitled ‘The Order of Common Security: Cooperation, Inclusiveness and Open Access’ organized by by Tsinghua University.

On July 17 Vladimir Bartenev made a presentation on ‘Russian-Chinese cooperation in countering terrorism and extremism’ at the joint panel ‘Russian-Chinese Security Cooperation’ organized by the School of World Politics, Lomonosov Moscow State University and Tsinghua University.

The panelists were the 6th Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and the Dean of School of World Politics, Lomonosov Moscow State University Andrey Kokoshin, the Director of the Institute of Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Li Yongquan, a Senior Associate and the Chair of the Russia in the Asia-Pacific Program at the Carnegie Moscow Center Alexander Gabuev. The panel was moderated by Professor Wu Dahui from the Institute of International Studies at Tsinghua University.

Initiated in 2012, the World Peace Forum is organized by Tsinghua University with assistance from Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs. It is China's first non-governmental high-level forum on international security. It was institutionalized in 2013 and is intended to provide a platform for strategists to talk about international security.

In 2016 the 5th World Peace Forum was opened by the Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong, the Former State Councilor and Chairman of the World Peace Forum Tang Jiaxuan and the President of Tsinghua University Qiu Yong. This year’s forum was attended by a number of high-ranking policymakers, including the former Prime Minister of France (2005-2007) Dominique de Villepin, the former Prime Minister of Japan (2009-2010) Yukio Hatoyama, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan (2004-2007) Shaukat Aziz, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Secretary General of the Council of the European Union (1999-2009) Javier Solana, and the 6th Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation  and the Dean of School of World Politics, Lomonosov Moscow State University Andrey Kokoshin.  

Representatives from 52 embassies and more than 200 international and Chinese scholars attended the forum.
